It is filled with cemetery records and photos that have been submitted by the site's members. I've created memorials to some ancestors, and I've also become a volunteer, traveling to local cemeteries and taking photos of graves from requests that come through the Find A Grave website.
Since there are millions of graves saved on the site, I thought my chances would be pretty good that I would find some family graves. And boy have I! My favorite so far is the graves of my great-grandfather Earl Hyde, and my great-grandmother Nellie F. Hyde. Earl's grave was already posted on the site, and Nellie's appeared after I put in a photo request for her grave.
So, I now know where they are buried (Marietta, OH), and I can't wait to visit some day!

Back to Blogging...

I'm going to make a concerted effort to blog about my genealogy journey...I think I burned myself out last year trying to keep up with 4 blogs. Online, at the library scanning through books, trips to NYC to look at books at the Public Library...I'm obsessed! Up to now it's been all about the number of ancestors I could add to my tree, and how far back I could get. I think I'm going to switch gears. I want to start researching family history, by concentrating on one or two people at a time, and try to find out as much as I can about them. Should be interesting, but my problem is resources. I just don't have the money (like Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick do on "Who Do You Think You Are") to travel the country and the world to do my research. SO, I'll be sticking to the internet and local libraries (Lower Bucks County, Philadelphia Free Library and the New Your Public Library) at first.
Good luck to me!

Scans from Old Negatives

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NMiwTUPTk3k/SzJV-rczkxI/AAAAAAAADB8/H-tkLmcBae0/s400/Bruce+and+Joann+Hyde+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418487836983923474" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 231px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NMiwTUPTk3k/SzJV-GsQr3I/AAAAAAAADB0/77Y-7WDwIE0/s400/Moorehead.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418487827116633970" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NMiwTUPTk3k/SzJV93h4V8I/AAAAAAAADBs/mMbC0hcRxug/s400/Mary+Hyde+year+unknown.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418487823046563778" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 282px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_NMiwTUPTk3k/SzJV9msozjI/AAAAAAAADBk/oOSgMg7lnfY/s400/Mary+Hyde+Aug+26th+1922.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418487818528280114" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 302px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_NMiwTUPTk3k/SzJV9TCVKaI/AAAAAAAADBc/3879D8646ds/s400/Beryl+Moorehead+and+Beryl+and+Mary+Hyde.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418487813250558370" />
These were all scanned from old negatives I brought home from my parents - I think they came out great! My reason was because I've hit brick walls on the Crawford and Camidge sides. I've not looked at anything family tree related since last Tuesday because I got frustrated. I was searching through passengers lists to see if I could find what ship my family members had come over on. VERY time consuming.
I think that I need to try to find a class that I can take to learn where to go from here.

It's late, and I'm tired. Here we go...it's a little confusing, so try to keep up...

Robert Hyde born 1465 in Norbury, Cheshire, England had 5 children, 2 of which were Hamnet, born in 1491, and Laurence born in 1511.

Our family descended from Hamnet, and 3 generations later, William Hyde came to America. Obviously, we are the poor branch of the tree.

The Royal Family descended from Laurence. Laurence had a son Henry, who had a son Edward, who had a daughter Anne. Anne married James Stuart, the Duke of York, who eventually became King James II. Anne and James' daughter Mary became Queen Mary, and when she died in 1702, her sister Anne became Queen Anne. So, what this means is that I am some kind of cousin to Queen Elizabeth.

Also, to go back a few generations, Anne Hyde's brother Henry, the 2nd Earl of Clarendon, had a son named Edward, who was the 3rd Earl of Clarendon. He came to America as Lord Cornbury, and was appointed as the Govenor of New York and New Jersey. Unfortunately, it looks like he was not a good govenor or a nice guy - click here for the story they have in Wikipedia. Here is a picture ....

So, like I said earlier...I always knew that I was a princess, and maybe Princess Fergie really is my long lost relative.

What we found in New York City

WOW - last weekend was VERY exciting, for more reasons than Robbie and I in NYC (read here for non-genealogy related story). We did go to New York, with the intent of visiting the New York Public Library, which has an extensive genealogy collection. As always, it was a great day! Here are some of our findings....

After a short walk through downtown NYC, we headed to St Pauls Chapel by Ground Zero, where I had located a HYDE grave. I haven't worked on making the connection to our family, but wanted to have a photo just in case I was able to.

Her name was Margaret Hyde. She died on July 30, 1814 at 32 years old. There is some kind of inscription at the bottom of the grave marker, but we couldn't read it.

Then we were off to the library. It was incredible, and I will be going back often. This is the Genealogy Reading Room....

Yes, they have a reading room just for geneaology! (there is a whole separate room for microfilm that we didn't go into).There are research computers, and tables, and of you find a book that you want to use, you fill out a little slip that lists your information, the book you want, and where you are sitting, and about 3 minutes later the book is brought to you. It was amazing! What was truely amazing was that I got to hold in my hand an original copy of Hyde Genealogy; or, The descendents, in the female as well as the male lines, from William Hyde of Norwich by Reuben H. Walworth (the H stands for Hyde). This book is the Holy Grail for our branch of the Hyde family in the United States. It starts with William Hyde, who was the ancestor that came to the colonies from England in 1633,and runs through the generations to Samuel Wilson Hyde, who was alive in 1857 (the book was published in 1864). The book was too old and brittle for me to copy, so we took pictures of the pages that we wanted, and the pictures came out nice and clear.

Using this book I was able to comfirm that Hudson Benedict Hyde is in our family tree - he is my great-great-great grandfather. I was also able to confirm that my great-great-grandmother's name was Irene Carpenter. She was married to Samuel Wilson Hyde, and thier son was Earl Hyde (my great grandfather). He married Nellie Forsythe, they had a son Earl Forsythe Hyde (grandaddy), who married Mary Frances Moorhead, who had a son Bruce Gilbert, who married Dorothy Patricia Crawford, who had a daughter named Dottie Jo! The only problem was that since the book only listed information through 1857, and Earl was born in 1863, I could not make the connection to him. What I need to do is see if I can get a copy of Earl's birth certificate, and then the line is complete.

We looked at another book, titled Hyde and Fuller Familes in England and the United States by Florence Fuller Hyde that was published in 1964. There wasn't anything about our family in there, but we did find out that the Hyde's are tied into the Royal Family of England. I need to do a little research on this, but the copy of the tree that was in the book shows a Laurence Hyde that was buried in 1590 who had some very important sons. His son Laurence was the attorney general to Queen Anne (married to King Janes II). He was a knight, as were 3 of his sons. Another son of Laurence I was Henry, whose sons and grandsons are listed as Earl of Clarendon, the Lord Chancelor of England, and one was Lord Cornbury, who I know I've heard of. One of Henry's sons, Henry II, was the 2nd Earl of Clarendon. His brother Laurence was the Earl of Rochester. His sister Anne married the Duke of York, making her the Duchess of York (same title currently held by Sarah Ferguson, former wife of Prince Andrew). The Duke became King James II, and their children were Queen Mary and Queen Anne. I am going to work to see if I can find our connection to this branch of the family. By the time that the original Laurence was born, we were already here in the US, but I know there is a connection somewhere. I always knew I was a princess!

So, that is what we found - a few answers and more mysteries to solve. I'm beginning to realize that this whole endeavor is going to be that same - 1 answer and 2 more questions. But I sure am having fun!

tales of Lords, Ladies and Knights

Boy, did I have fun last night! I hit it big! (I do need to remember that all of my information is coming from other peoples research, so I have to take it all with a grain of salt.) That said, woohoo!

Yesterday I started to track some of the branches that shoot off of the Hyde branch. In Ancestry.com, when you add a person to your tree, it automatically searches for any bits of information about them (the site calls them "hints"). These hints could be historical documents like federal census, or it could be an entry on another public family tree held on the site. These other trees are where I've gotten a lot of my information. The good thing is that there are about 8 trees with the same information, so we are all either correct in our assumptions, or we are all reporting the same invalid information.

All of that said, yesterday I hit the mother load. In 1658, John Calkins and Sarah Royce were married. John and Sarah were the parents of Elizabeth Calkins, who married Samuel Hyde in 1690. I decided to track the Royce line. I was able to take it back to Llywarch ap Rhirid, who was born in 927 in Wales. I never knew that there was Welsh on the Hyde side, and it is a VERY interesting line to say the least. I've only looked into 2 of the descendants, but here is what I've learned so far.

1. In old Welsh, ap means son and verch means daughter. These were used when naming someone. The set up of the name was usually (given name)(relationship)(relative)<given><relationship><relative><given><relationship><relative,>. So, Ryhs ap Thomas was the son of Thomas, and Efa verch Henry was the daughter of Henry.

2. I've found 2 knights in the line - Sir Rhys ap Thomas, who was reported to have killed King Richard III, ending the War of the Roses (he was knighted by Henry 3 days later), and his grandson, Rhys ap Gruffydd, falsely accused of treason and beheaded by Henry VIII.

3. There are 2 castles associated with the Rhys family - Dinefwr Castle and Carew Castle. Both are still standing today.

(Carew Castle, Wales)

(tomb of Sir Ryhs ap Thomas)

(Sir Rhys ap Thomas - born 1449, Cantref, Carmarthenshire, Wales died 1525, Friary, Carmarthenshire, Wales )

You can find more information on this family if you Google either of these names. During the 900+ years between John and myself, our name has changed a number of times. We've been known as Hyde, Huyde, De Huyde, De Hyde, and even De La Hyde. The name means...

(Locality). A farm; as much land as can be cultivated with one plow; a town of Cheshire, England. Hyd, or Hithe, a landing place, a haven, harbor.

So, I guess we are descendants of the original Hydes - most of the Hyde's on my list that are from England lived in Cheshire.

Pretty cool, I think.

If I'm feeling ambisious over the weekend, I'll type up the 27 generations from Dottie Jo Hyde to John De La Hyde. And then I'm on to the next branch....

Hyde - more progress made

I received the death certificate I ordered in the mail today. It is for Earl Hyde, my great-grandfather. And it is him - I was not 100% sure, but the gamble of paying $7 for the copy paid off. I was able to get some more information off of the certificate. Like...

Earl Hyde born July 14, 1863, Oswego, NY
died November 6, 1919, Marietta, OH

father Samuel Hyde born in Groton, NY, and mother Irene or Irena Canfunter or Ganfunter (the handwriting is hard to read) - she was born in Groton,NY also, which is where my grandfather Earl Forsythe Hyde was born.

The death certificate was signed by Frank Hyde, my great uncle.

The "Place of Burial or Removal" is listed as Oak Grove Vault. He is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta, OH, along with his wife Nellie Louise.

He died of some kind of heart disease...again, it's hard to read. The words I can read are "disease of heart", "schlerosis", and "heart block".

He was buried on November 8, 1919.

So, it's been a productive day. I've also been working on taking the Hyde branch back as far as I can in the United States, whic is sometime in the mid-1600's. I'm just about there. Once I have it done, I'll post it here.

If anyone has any information that may help me in my search, please leave a comment!

grandmom and granddaddy Hyde

Since my last post was about the Hyde/Moorhead branch, here are photos of Earl and Mary Hyde, taken in the yard of their house at 417 Leedom Ave in Bristol, Pennsylvania....
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 280px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NMiwTUPTk3k/TEclGdNBYnI/AAAAAAAADjk/pWDOEHYAQzg/s400/0495fb11-bb34-4fed-a781-6a0576acec60-0.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496402663077667442" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 280px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NMiwTUPTk3k/TEclFoCY6rI/AAAAAAAADjc/JPW6JU2uvTQ/s400/405a95ae-14b3-4556-a332-81a347094f70-0.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496402648805993138" />
(look close and you can see Grandmom's hat and purse on the ground next to the chair in the photo above)

mysterious great-grandfathers

There is some mystery surrounding my great-grandfathers on my father's side - Earl Hyde and Frank Moorhead. Earl's mystery has been solved - we didn't know when he died. I've been able to track that date down through online records, and am now waiting for a copy of his death certificate to come in the mail from Ohio. I found that he died on November 6, 1919, in Washington County, Ohio. My grandfather Earl would have been 22 when he died. I've also found records of the family in the 1920 Federal Census. They all lived together in Marietta, OH - mother Nellie, son Frank, his wife and two daughters, and son Earl along with his first wife Coryinne. This first marriage didn't last long, because he married my grandmother Mary in 1925. The story is that Mary paid for Earl's divorce so she could marry him. That sounds like Grandmom!

Frank Moorhead is a mystery that is going to take a lot of work to solve. He was born about 1871, and married my great-grandmother Beryl Kline, who was born about 1877. My grandmother, Mary Frances Moorhead, was born December 10, 1899, in Newport News, VA. Per the 1900 Federal Census, Frank worked as a bartender in Newport News. Sometime after that they moved to Louisiana and Texas so Frank could work in the oil fields. The story taht has been told is that he dissappeared while they were in Texas. No one seems to know if he died, or just ran off. I've been searching for records of him under Frank Moorhead, but of course if he was planning on running off, he could have changed his name, his age, or anything. I've found a record of a Frank Moorhead (born in 1872), that was living in Erie, PA who was listed as a widower. Could this be him? I also found a listing for a Frank Moorhead born in 1847 in Washington, PA. This Frank was a Civil War veteran, and I know that Grandmom used to talk about someone in her family being a Civil War veteran. Could this be Grandmom's grandfather? This one is going to take a lot of work...

Next I'll post an update on the Crawford/Bieber families....

my inspiration

my grandparents.....my mother's parents...

Walter Gordon Crawford, born December 16, 1911...died April, 1957
Esther Mildred (Jones) Crawford born October 7, 1914...died August 20, 1999

<img style="display:block; I had inherited my grandfathers interest in genealogy, and wanted to build on the huge family tree that he had hired someone to build for him. I loved it, and was able to take the Hyde branch of our tree back to 1090 in England. And then I got sidetracked, with kids, dogs, relocating, hubbie's hobbies, trips to New York, photography....too many things to count. Well, in the last week or so, I decided that I would like to get back into it. So, I am canceling the correspondence photography classes I've been trying to take. I joined a genealogy website (Ancestry.com), and have been making progress. I'm concentrating on my family, which is why this blog is called Hyde/Crawford, and not Cassaday/Hyde. Eventually I may get to my in-law trees, but I have a HUGE task ahead of me with my own family. Wish me luck!
